A V-ring seal is an all-rubber axial lip seal that stretches and mounts directly onto a rotating shaft. Its flexible lip bears axially against a counterface (housing face or bearing outer ring), creating a barrier that excludes dust, dirt, water, and other contaminants from entering the bearing or lubricated area, without the need for a precisely machined housing bore.

Axle seals should be replaced when you notice oil or grease leakage around the axle, visible cracking or hardening of the seal lip, increased bearing noise or vibration, or during major drivetrain service events such as bearing replacement. Preventive replacement is also recommended if the seal has been in service for several years or shows signs of wear during inspection.

The service life of a V-ring seal depends on shaft speed, operating temperature, exposure to chemicals or moisture, and the elastomeric compound used. Under typical conditions, quality V-seals can last tens of thousands of operating hours. V-ring seals are most commonly manufactured from NBR (Nitrile), which offers excellent oil and abrasion resistance.
