Common rubber seal types include O-rings, X-rings, V-seals, T-seals, S-seals, FS-seals, gaskets, packings, packer elements, hydraulic seals, pneumatic seals, and metal-bonded rubber seals. Each configuration is designed for specific operating conditions — static or dynamic, rotary or reciprocating — and is available in compounds like NBR, FKM, EPDM, HNBR, and silicone to suit temperature, pressure, and chemical exposure requirements.

EPDM is widely considered the best rubber material for outdoor weatherproofing due to its excellent resistance to UV radiation, ozone, and weathering. It performs reliably across a temperature range of -55°C to 125°C. For applications also involving oils or fuels, FKM (Viton) offers superior chemical resistance along with good weathering performance, though at a higher cost.

Temperature capability depends on the compound. NBR seals operate from -40°C to 100°C, EPDM from -55°C to 125°C, FKM/Viton from -26°C to 250°C, VMQ (silicone) from -60°C to 225°C, and HNBR from approximately -30°C to 165°C. For extreme environments above 200°C, FFKM and FEPM materials are available for applications such as downhole oil and gas operations.

Dynamic seals require materials and geometries engineered for wear resistance and low friction, such as X-rings, V-seals, and hydraulic rod and piston seals.
