Upstream Oil and Gas Seals for E&P Applications

Oil seals can include rotary shaft seals, O-rings, gaskets, packings, back-up rings, bonded seals, V-seals, T-seals, X-rings, and specialized oilfield seals such as FS-Seals and S-Seals. The right type depends on motion, pressure, temperature, chemical exposure, hardware geometry, and whether the application is static, dynamic, reciprocating, or rotary.

Upstream E&P applications commonly use O-rings, back-up rings, packer elements, hammer union seals, S-Seals, FS-Seals, gaskets, packings, and metal-bonded rubber seals. These components support wellheads, connectors, downhole tools, high-pressure valves, mill casings, and other equipment exposed to pressure, abrasive media, hydrocarbons, and chemically aggressive environments.

FS-Seals are robust interference seals designed to bridge and seal large clearances and irregular surfaces. They are especially useful in demanding interfaces such as those between wellheads and mill casings. Available in advanced elastomeric compounds, including RGD-resistant materials, they help maintain sealing integrity under extreme pressures, temperatures, and harsh chemical exposure.

S-Seals are engineered for rigorous oil and gas applications such as wellheads, connectors, downhole tools, and high-pressure valves. Their non-extrusion springs, made from durable metal alloys, improve flexibility and support under high stress. DSC can also customize S-Seals to fit specific hardware, pressure, material, and performance requirements.

DSC provides access to hundreds of compounds across rubber types including FKM, NBR, HNBR, XNBR, EPDM, VMQ, FVMQ, LSR, CR, ECO, IIR, SBR, FFKM, AEM, polyurethane, and TPU. Material selection is based on chemical compatibility, pressure, temperature, extrusion resistance, wear, compression set, and the operating conditions of the equipment.

Back-up rings fill the extrusion gap in an O-ring gland, helping prevent the O-ring from being forced into clearance spaces under pressure. Made from higher-hardness materials, they increase the pressure capability of standard O-rings while maintaining a compact sealing assembly. DSC offers back-up rings sized for AS568 series O-rings in NBR and FKM.

DSC supports custom material development and testing through a fully equipped ISO 17025 accredited lab. If an existing compound is not suitable, DSC can help develop and evaluate a material against application requirements.
