They offer cross sectional stability in the gland, resisting twist in reciprocating applications and clustering in rotary applications

The design offers additional sealing surfaces compared to a standard O-ring and allows for lower sealing forces to provide effective sealing, thus enabling lower friction in the installation process and in the application.
